*****The difference between Jumping and Pulling Guard:

Jumping Guard (Illegal Technique)- When a competitor jumps into the guard with both feet off of the ground and is expecting their opponent to “catch” them.  Sometimes this is done without the competitor even holding or touching  the other competitor. This technique is not allowed in any division under any circumstances!!! This is an extremely dangerous technique that will not be allowed.

Pulling Guard (Legal Technique) – Pulling guard is exactly like it sounds.  You are pulling your opponent down to the ground into your guard with at least one foot on the ground. Pulling guard requires one opponent to make contact with the other.  A grip must be established on either a sleeve, collar, head, gi top or any part of the competitor prior to pulling their opponent down to the ground into their guard.  Sitting to the guard is not permitted. Butt scooting is not permitted.  You must attempt to take your opponent to the ground or pull them to the ground.  This simulates a real fight.  Would you sit to your butt in a real fight?

The Long Game

July 31, 2012

At 33 years of age, with a family, a job that requires me to keep my face in a state the doesn't scare people and a 3 year old that requires me to be injury free, I have fallen in love with MMA. It's not exactly a match made in heaven. I mean, with young superstars starting their training at 5 years old, I often feel like I need to make up some serious lost time. Now, I know what you're thinking: "Anderson Silva is 37... Randy Couture is 75.... blah, blah, blah." It's different. Dragging my white-belt ass to the gym to be constantly humbled by spry young talents like most of the folk a the U, requires a certain dedication. Or obsession. Or mental disorder. However you cook it, to want to push yourself to your limits, to be tested mentally and physically and to test yourself in such a way, requires a certain "something." What I have recently found out is that "something" isn't necessarily the desire to be a champion or in my case even the desire to get in the cage. It doesn't require you to be a gifted athlete or a fierce competitor or a young guy with tattoos and anger management issues.  It's something bigger. It's about choosing to be a part of a community. It's about self betterment and helping a team. Whatever your level, it's about conquering your fears and daring to succeed. That "something" goes beyond gritty sparring battles. It's about finding the time to go to class, finishing the last 5 push-ups even though no-ones watching, taking care of new members, challenging your partners out of respect and ultimately it's about doing it all again tomorrow- next month- next year. It's the desire to learn for a lifetime. I truly believe it's in all of us. Till next time. NP
